Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of a university centre for sports, health and physical education revealed that any surviving archaeology on the site had been removed by the construction of the houses fronting Tyndall Avenue. These were constructed early in the 20th century before being replaced by a university car park that existed on the site until the present development started. From the 18th century the site formed part of an Ornamental Park created by Thomas Tyndall until the Tyndall estate was disposed of in the early 20th century and Tyndall Avenue was created. A relict topsoil deposit was recorded during the groundwork excavations although there was no evidence to associate this with the ornamental park. [Au(abr)] |
