Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that several Palaeolithic artefacts had been found in the surrounding area, and that extensive evidence of Mesolithic flintworking had been recorded during the recent construction of a nearby road. A small amount of Neolithic pottery had also been recovered during monitoring of the road construction, and parts of two Bronze Age trackways had been recorded. A small number of Roman coins had been found in the area, and evidence of a Roman settlement described as 'fairly humble' had been recorded. At the same site, a substantial proportion of a stone foundation for a large medieval building had been excavated. Further medieval remains had also been recorded in the area. It was concluded that the site had a good potential for significant prehistoric archaeological remains, particularly of the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, as well as a moderate potential for Palaeoithic remains. The potential for significant remains from the Roman and later periods was considered to be low. It was recommended that an evaluation should be carried out, followed by a watching brief during the construction programme. [AIP]
