Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to development. The site lay on the flood plain of the River Thames. Following a Late Iron Age/Romano-British rise in the water table and alluvium deposition a complex pattern of channels developed. The exact location of the site was uncertain, although it had been argued that until the 12th century the site lay within an area crossed by a major tributary. Activity associated with the construction of a major causeway bridge system led to increased sedimentation and eventually the silting of this river channel. The site therefore had the potential to contain archaeological or paleoenvironmental remains. Evidence suggested that during the medieval period the site lay within the holding of Blackfriars Priory, following its dissolution in 1538 the land was used as market garden during the post-medieval period until the 19th century when it became building land. It was possible that some evidence for these activities will have survived below the existing building. [Au(adp)] |
