Abstract:
A pre-planning archaeological appraisal was undertaken of the Abbey Park Campus of Leicester College. An analysis of the data identified a high archaeological potential within the area of the proposal site at the Abbey Park Campus. This potential was likely to have been multi-period in nature. It was possible that Roman roadside activity such as settlement features or burials could be encountered along with possible Bronze Age, medieval and post-medieval occupation. The medieval activity may comprise remains associated with the site of the former St. Johns Chapel. Remains of the post-medieval Spital Almshouse may also be located. The map research demonstrated, however, that there would be much modern disturbance and potential truncation of underlying archaeological deposits and features. There was intense 19th-20th century industrial and residential development on the site and buildings of the present Charles Keene College currently occupied it. The settings of the Grade II Listed Registered Historic Park and Garden of Abbey Park, the Grade C Listed church of St Mark and the Grade II Listed St Mark's church hall and school on Memory Lane may be affected by development on the proposal site.
