Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of 226 pile probes while a further 129 were observed following their excavation, as part of the evaluation. The probes revealed evidence of the 19th century wet and dry docks and their subsequent demolition. A single 'L' shaped trench with the long axis on both sides being 30m long by 10m wide was excavated towards the northern edge of the site. This revealed evidence of a high gravel ridge which was cut through by a linear, but undated, intrusion. A thick deposit of clay alluvium sealed this sequence. Cutting through the latter was evidence for a 19th century dock and its associated buildings. [Au(adp)] |
