Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of eight geo-technical trial pits in advance of the proposed development of the site. One of the trial pits revealed the remains of a cobbled path or track that appeared to pre-date the construction of City Road in 1882. It was possible that this feature was the last vestige of an 18th or 19th century alley that ran from Stockbridge up to the Town Wall. Two of the trial pits revealed the brick and concrete culvert through which the Pandon Burn now flowed. A further two of the trial pits contained portions of brick foundations that were likely to have belonged to the warehouses which were known to have occupied the area in the 19th and early 20th century. The southernmost trial pit contained extensive demolition deposits overlying a naturally deposited and undisturbed layer of sand, which may have represented part of the bed of the River Tyne. The excavation of the remaining two trial pits was halted due to the presence of large rafts of modern concrete. No archaeological features were observed within these trenches prior to the abandonment. No artefactual evidence was recovered from the eight trial pits. The results of this watching brief allied to the evidence from previous archaeological excavations in the area strongly suggested that important archaeological deposit survived over at least part of the area of the proposed development.
