Abstract: |
A sample excavation of building debris resulting from a fire was carried out within the hall of Botleys Mansion, in order to ascertain the condition and depth of burial of ornamental details of the ground floor plaster ceilings. The plaster was found to lie principally within the layer immediately above the floor. Its condition was found to be generally poor, although some parts had fallen in large pieces and had subsequently been protected from further damage by other falling material. It was concluded that plaster did survive in a condition which would allow it to make an important contribution to the restoration of the building, and that its successful recovery would require the further use of archaeological techniques.
