Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was conducted in advance of a proposed development of the site. The assessment comprised a desk-based study, geophysical survey and trial trenching, followed by an assessment of the archaeological significance of the development. The desk-based survey identified the early medieval origins of the village of School Aycliffe. No evidence of settlement activity within the study area was forthcoming from documentary or cartographic sources. The area had been in agricultural use during the last few centuries. There were no Listed Buildings or other statutorily protected sites or structures within the proposed development area, or near vicinity, that would be affected by the development. Geophysical anomalies of potential archaeological interest were sampled by trial trenches. No archaeological deposits were identified. No further schemes of archaeological works were recommended with regard to this development scheme. [Au(abr)] |
