Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a relief road within Crawley, a town originally laid out in the 13th century. A possible iron Age pottery manufacturing site and a number of sites relating to medieval iron-working had been recorded nearby. During the evaluation, a Mesolithic flint and an Early Neolithic flint were recovered, and medieval features were recorded. These included post holes, gullies and a group of pits. A separate gully may have been a boundary feature. A dump of iron slag indicated the proximity of an iron production or working site. Later medieval pottery was recovered from a terraced feature of uncertain function. [AIP] |
