Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken on an area of land close to the medieval town wall of Newcastle, which is a scheduled ancient monument. Previous excavations nearby had revealed the remains of buildings belonging to the medieval Carmelite Friary which was built on top of traces of Roman activity. It was these archaeological remains which were recognised as being of major importance and it was recommended that any future work on the site would require major archaeological work. [AIP] |
