Abstract: |
An evaluation, comprising the excavation of two machine trenches and four machine test pits, produced evidence for features and deposits of mostly post-medieval and modern date. Evidence for activity prior to the 19th century was restricted to a single sherd of medieval pottery, recovered from below a wall, possibly of contemporary date. The post-medieval and modern deposits sealed a substantial layer of alluvium , indicating that much of the site lay within low lying, frequently flooded, estuarine meadowland prior to the development of the Market Road frontage in the early part of this century.
