Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposed development of the site. Previous fieldwork in the vicinity had revealed evidence from the Neolithic to the medieval periods. The surrounding landscape was rich in archaeological remains including cropmarks of prehistoric ring ditches, an Iron Age hillfort at Wilbury Hill 3.6m west of the site and late Pre-Roman Iron Age and Romano-British occupation at Hawthorn Hill, 2.2km west of the site. A Romano-British settlement also lay 1km to the east. The suggested line of the Icknield Way, a major routeway from at least the Neolithic period, ran across the northern edge of the site. Human burials, of Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon date, were discovered during excavations nearby. The report concluded that, as the site had been under arable cultivation in the recent past, that any archaeological sites within the area could be located by topsoil sampling. The site may also have been protected from deep ploughing by the presence of a sports field from 1972 and would therefore be likely to offer the potential for good geophysical results. [Au(adp)]
