Abstract: |
The site was located in a Priority Archaeological Area as defined by the local planning authority. A draft planning consent for the construction of two linked blocks of apartments of three-storeys had a PPG16 style archaeological planning condition. No alluvial clays or peats were present on the site. The assessment determined that the site had a low potential for in situ archaeological remains, although derived residual finds could conceivably be present. A relatively large number of archaeological interventions had been carried out within a 1km radius of the study site. However, none of these had revealed significant archaeological remains. It was considered probable that any archaeological intervention on the study site would replicate these negative results. Past development, bomb damage and site clearance was likely to have had a significant and widespread archaeological impact. On the basis of all the available evidence, the report did not recommend, in this particular instance, the implementation of any further archaeological mitigation measures. [Au(adp)] |
