Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and a geophysical survey of two areas associated with one of several alternative bypass routes were carried out. Area 1 was partly covered by ridge and furrow, and was crossed by three ditches which were probably former drainage ditches. An 18th century and possibly earlier mill and the possible site of a medieval building had been recorded nearby. Geophysical survey of a site adjacent to Area 5 had identified pits and ditches, whilst a Scheduled Ancient Monument comprising a complex of prehistoric and Romano-British features lay within 300m. A survey of Area 5 itself recorded a complex of anomalies representing linear features and pits, as well as a ring ditch which had previously been identified. Some of the features may have represented post-medieval field boundaries, although older archaeological features also appeared to be present. [AIP] |
