Abstract: |
The excavation of a cable trench on land adjacent to the Broughton Hill Barrow Group, was archaeologically monitored. The new cable trench continued for a distance of c.170m along an existing trackway (Queenwoood Avenue), from a new communications facility on the west side of Broughton Hill, joining with an existing mains cable adjacent to Broughton Hill Cottage. It crossed through the Broughton Hill group of four round barrows, within 15m to the south of the most northerly of the barrows and 15m to the north of a second barrow but did not directly impact upon any SAM. An absence of artefacts or associated settlement-type features indicated their probable agricultural function, but they were of uncertain date. It was considered that should more extensive evidence for archaeological activity be present on the site, it would have been identified during this monitoring exercise. [Au(abr)] |
