Abstract: |
Detailed gradiometry was undertaken with the aim of locating any features of archaeological interest in four fields which surrounded Pennance Farm. The work formed part of a wider evaluation being undertaken by Cornwall Archaeological Unit. Previous geophysical survey work had identified numerous anomalies of potential archaeological interest in a field north-east of Pennance Farm. There was no other known archaeology in the survey area. Background levels of noise in each field investigated were quite high and as a consequence the interpretation of many of the responses was difficult. In many cases it was impossible to say whether the observed anomalies were archaeological or natural in origin. However, despite these difficulties, there were numerous responses that were clearly of archaeological interest. These invariably comprised ditch lengths, presumably associated with former field boundaries, or segments of enclosure ditches. There was also evidence in the data for possible ring ditches or curving features and several large pit-like responses. [Au(abr)] |
