Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the construction of a sewerage rising main diversion. Several archaeological sites had been recorded in the vicinity of the pipeline route, including findspots of Roman and medieval pottery, a 13th century church, the site of a windmill and a number of pillboxes dating from the Second World War. During the watching brief, a substantial brick structure and an ash-filled pit were recorded. These were assumed to have been of post-medieval date, and to have related to a building shown on the Tithe Map of 1840. The possible remnant of a ditch containing slate, bone, stone and pottery, a brick-lined well, and a horizon of apparent demolition rubble were also observed. Pottery recovered from the possible ditch included two sherds of later medieval material. The sands around the well produced a number of large 17th-18th century sherds. [AIP] |
