Abstract:
An excavation was carried out at a site proposed for opencast coal mining, where earlier evaluation had revealed evidence of extensive iron-working activity, including two furnaces, deposits of slag, fuel waste, ore and an ore crushing area. A substantial excavation followed closely upon completion of the evaluation. Eight medieval furnaces were recorded in total, within an area associated with the preparation of iron ore, extraction of clay for furnace building and the disposal of iron slag. The furnaces exhibited a range of variations in form. None of the supertructures had survived, and there was no evidence for associated buildings or other structures. In situ slag was found within the majority of the furnaces, and slag-tapping pits were recorded. Two of the furnaces lay at the centre of a complex activity area on the eastern side of the site. Activities here had included ore crushing, evidenced by an ore crushing surface and substantial deposits of crushed ore, and a ground level hearth, perhaps associated with bloom refining or secondary smithing. It was concluded that the excavated evidence indicated iron production on a modest scale, perhaps only over a period of a few years, but that the excavated portion of the site was only a part of a more extensive ironworking complex. The most likely context for the site was a bloomery associated with the cannons of Dale Abbey, who had owned the land, and had had access to the resources needed for ironworking from the 13th century onwards. Archaeomagnetic dating suggested that the bloomery had been operational in the later part of the 13th century. [AIP]
