Abstract: |
A desk-top assessment was undertaken to determine the archaeological implications of proposed development to the east of Church Lane, Ancaster. Neolithic finds and an Iron Age settlement are recorded nearby, and in Roman times a town grew up, with forts, roads and a large cemetery. Ditches flanking a Roman road were considered likely to be encompassed within the proposed development site. Anglo-Saxon activity was limited to the find of a cemetery which overlay a Romano-British burial ground to the south of the village. Medieval remains were scarce, only the parish church and the site of a small medieval chapel opposite were noted. The present ground conditions suggested fair preservation of any surviving archaeological deposits. No recent intrusion into the site was observed. [Au(abr)] |
