Abstract:
Two areas and two trenches were excavated prior to the development of the site. An earlier evaluation had revealed evidence of structures, in the form of post holes and construction trench, from the prehistoric (possibly Bronze Age) periods and early Saxon date. Area one in the north-western part of the site revealel traces of lte 19th to early 20th centruy allotments cut into an underlying plough soil. Below the ploughsoil, three pits and a curving feature were excavated. Two of the pits and the curving feature all produced struck flints, probably of a Neolithic date, as well as burnt flint. The majority of the remaining features and the plough soil produced struck flints, generally of Neolithic/Bronze Age date, as well as burnt flint. Area 2, in the south-western part of the site, produced another construction slot and several independant post holes, but no datable artefacts. It was presumed that these features were Saxon as the alignment of the construction trench was similar to that found in an evaluation trench. Only a small part of Area 2 could be excavated as there were areas of contamination close by. The two trenches produced only modern features. The excavation showed that there was sporadic Neolithic, Bronze Age and Saxon occupation in the area, but no settlement evidence. [Au(adp]
