Abstract: |
The Lancaster University Archaeological Unit, at the request of RPS Clouston, undertook a documentary survey of an area at Branch End Farm, Stublick near Hexham, in April 1996. This followed on from a similar survey undertaken in 1995 by RPS Clouston. At the client's request, research was concentrated on sources likely to yield information on the pre-19th century development of coal-mining in the study area. The project indicated that the survey area straddled the boundary between the Regality of Hexham and Langley Barony, both land units being of medieval origin. The area was enclosed by agreement in the late 18th century, although there was field evidence for an earlier phase of enclosure and cultivation. Mining within the broader Stublick Coalfield was documented from before 1736, but the first known evidence for mining within the study area dated from the 1770s. There was extensive activity in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, largely to supply nearby lead smeltmills. Mining declined in the later 19th century, and had ceased within the study area by 1896. [Au(abr)] |
