Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to the determination of planning permission for its proposed redevelopment. The site was thought to have a low to moderate potential for finds of the Neolithic period and low to moderate potential for finds and features of the Roman period. The sites archaeological potential for all other periods of human activity was believed to be low. A map dating to 1787 indicated that the site was in the form of two small fields probabaly used for market gardening, while a later tithe map of 1849 showed the site as largely undeveloped strips of land at the rear of gardens behind a terrace of small cottages fronting onto the Upper Richmond Road. In view of the sites limited archaeologcial potential, the impact of previous post-depositional horticultural activity and development, and the limited archaeological impact of the proposed development, the report did not recommend any further archaeological mitigation.
