Abstract:
A desk-based assessment, a watching brief and archaeological trial trenching was conducted in advance of a proposed development. The assessment concluded that the area had been occupied by tenements and formed the centre of medieval and post-medieval Middlesbrough. Cartographic sources indicated that the area had been substantially redeveloped in the 19th-20th centuries. The topography also suggested the ground had been built up to level foundations for the construction of the Cathedral. The trial trenching and watching brief revealed evidence of 19th-20th century deposits. A full scheme of excavation and recording was recommended. [Au(adp)]
