Abstract: |
In August and September 1996, and January 1997 an archaeological investigation was carried out before and during the construction of 13 dwellings, access roads, services and landscaping. A post-medieval ditch, cut by a modern pond infilled in the 1970s was revealed and may have been part of a moat postulated to have once run around Elms Farm. No other evidence for a moat was discovered and the likelihood of one having existed was considered to be low. A barn to be demolished as part of the development was recorded. It dated from the later half of the 19th century but had been erected on earlier foundations. These may have been contemporary with the initial farmhouse of 1570-1600, but there was no associated dating evidence to confirm this. [Au(abr)] |
