Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the demolition of the existing buildings and the erection of a storage building. The assessment established that the development site was located in close proximity to the Roman road known as Ermine Street and also a roadside Roman settlement. The full extent of this settlement had not been established and it was therefore possible that it may have extended as far east as the site. However, there was a sharp drop in ground level along the eastern side of the GE Lighting plot which was probably the remains of a former brick pit. Such a brick pit would have destroyed any remains formerly within the site. It was considered that while the site had medium potential for Roman remains, this potential had been removed by recent former land-uses. Therefore, further archaeological mitigation work was considered unnecessary. [Au(adp)] |
