Abstract: |
<summary>An excavation was carried out in advance of redevelopment. The archaeological investigation revealed a variety of timber, stone and brick buildings dating from the 16th to the 19th century. One notable building was uncovered lying close to Merton High Street and just within the projected line of the monastic precinct wall of Merton Priory. It was dated to the 17th century, with alterations during the 18th century. Brick walls, a timber-based drain, a cess-pit and a well dating to the 18th century were also excavated. An earlier timber structure was located below the cess-pit; it may represent the support timbers to a 16th/17th century building or mill built over a watercourse. A channel believed to be a calico ditch of the 18th century calico works was also found. {italon}AIP{italoff}{spacea}{italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} GLSMR021461 - 021464, 021470, 021471 |
