Abstract: |
A T-shaped trench was excavated across the site in response to a condition upon planning permission for an extension to The Dukes Head public house. This revealed the foundation of a late 18th century house, one of a terrace of 5 houses to the west of the Duke's Head pub. The area of the westernmost house (House A) and part of the penultimate house (House B) was then opened up and excavated. The excavation revealed most of the plan of House A (except for the gable end wall) and showed that this was the first building on the site. All of the finds dated from the late 18th century with the exception of one struck flint flake, found laying on the surface of the natural, but below the floor of House A. [Au(adp)] |
