Abstract: |
A proposed development at Merriams Farm would involve the conversion of several historic farm buildings. In order to determine the historic and archaeological significance of the buildings, an assessment was undertaken based on a physical examination of the structures and documentary research. The evidence suggested that Merriams Farm was principally a fruit farm, possibly relying on hop production, and that it may have undergone a significant shift of emphasis towards fruit and hops in the mid 19th century. At this date or earlier the buildings in this study were constructed, and they were of interest as surviving examples of 19th century fruit farming structures; their conversion would ensure their survival.
