Abstract:
An archaeological project involving a standing building survey and trial excavation was undertaken in advance of a residential development. The survey revealed that the buildings occupying the site had significant parts of the complex relating to the construction of the Albert Works, a chemical works for the brewing industry built in 1878. Trial trenches revealed Roman, medieval and post-medieval features. In addition a small number of possible Saxon pottery sherds were recovered. The principal features related to a series of Roman ditches and gullies located in Trenches 1 and 3 and the substantial remains of a post-medieval lime kiln. It was concluded that significant archaeological remains were preserved on the site as subterranean features and deposits. It was advised that the archaeological remains within the site were of high local and regional significance. A further programme of archaeological mitigation and recording was recommended during any site groundwork. [Au(adp)]
