Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation comprising documentary research and trial trenching was undertaken on land proposed for a new library and museum complex in Ludlow. Significant archaeological deposits were seen to have survived in both areas sampled by trial excavation, despite the recent extensive landscaping which accompanied the construction of the present car park. In the western part of the study area, the deposits, dating to the late medieval period, survived at depths of between 0.9m and 1.5m below the existing ground surface. At the eastern edge of the study area deposits in the form of late medieval and early post-medieval stone walls and surfaces lay at depths of between 0.3m and 0.7m below the surface. Preservation by record was recommended for the remains. [Au(adp)] |
