Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken at the site of the Friary, in Newark town centre. The well-preserved Civil War rampart had previously been identified at three points during a watching brief in 1982 and a further section was identified during the evaluation at the extreme east end of the development site, occupying a strip of 5-8m. Towards the centre of the site, area-stratified deposits and intermittent features, of tentative medieval date, were identified, whilst further west the natural subsoil was found to be overlain by deposits of probable recent date - this latter area had been much disturbed by greenhouses.
