Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed development site within the area of Bradwell Abbey, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, was undertaken. Proposals included the refurbishment and adaptation of existing buildings, and a limited amount of new construction. The abbey had been established in 1154, and was converted to a farm following the Dissolution. The original fabric of some of the monastic buildings survived at the site, incorporated into 17th and 18th century farmhouse buildings. Remaining monastic buildings included a chapel dating from 1330-40, a barn, a bakehouse and the south range of the farmhouse. Excavations and surveys had recorded medieval floors, walls and other features, as well as parts of the monastic cloister and the abbey church. The impacts of specific development proposals were considered, and archaeological excavation and recording were recommended. [AIP] |
