Abstract:
An assessment of the archaeological implications of refurbishment of a dam and related quarrying was commissioned after the commencement of works to the dam, so that a thorough list of the implications could not be compiled. Surface inspection was hindered due to vegetation, and it was possible to propose only five archaeological mitigation measures. Several features of archaeological interest had been recorded during an earlier survey of the area. It was noted that the historic Yorkshire Bridge had been protected against damage, but that machine stripping had already begun at the site of the former Bamford and Howden Railway. Other features included a terraced trackway, the Ladybower Dam and associated mid-20th century structures, and earthworks which were reputed to have marked the site of a temporary settlement established in the 1930s for men working on the construction of the dam and related structures. It was recommended that detailed recording of the earthworks and photographic recording of the dam and its immediate surrounds should be undertaken, that a watching brief should be maintained during the stripping of vegetation and overburden from the quarry, and that vegetation clearance followed by surface inspection should be carried out to either side of the haul road from the quarry to the dam. It was further recommended that a pair of cairns of unknown origin and date should be excluded fron the area to be quarried. [AIP]
