Abstract:
The survey was initiated to determine the nature and extent of the sub-surface archaeology within the environs of the proposed development site. Two areas comprising 5.22 ha were subjected to geophysical survey in two transects (6 & 7) within fields 32 and 33. Transect 6 was placed to determine the location of suspected bell-pit mining, whilst Transect 7 was located to investigate a rectilinear feature detected by aerial photographic survey. Detailed magnetometry survey successfully identified magnetic anomalies relating to sub-surface features. Magnetic anomalies consistent with the sub-surface remains of two separate phases of past agricultural usage were observed. Former field boundaries, ridge and furrow and an associated headland were identified, together with a large area of severe magnetic disturbance possibly relating to former bell-pit mining. Various pits and linear anomalies were evident within some parts of the survey area, but any archaeological significance ascribed to these features could only be speculative. Within that area of Transect 7 where the location of a rectilinear enclosure was detected by aerial photographic reconnaissance, the geophysical survey failed to identify firm evidence for such a structure.
