Abstract: |
Geoarchaeological monitoring of boreholes was undertaken following an archaeological desk-based assessment of the site which had concluded that brickearth extraction and an extensive basement had reduced the archaeological potential for the site to possible artefactual and palaeo-environmental evidence of Lower Palaeolithic date. No artefacts or biological materials were found in the Lynch Hill Terrace gravel. Although the chances of finding Palaeolithic material in a drilling exercise such as this were slim, these results indicated that the potential of this site for Palaeolithic archaeological and environmental reconstruction was low. The artefacts found at the top of Borehole 3 were identified as modern contamination, in the case of the brick, and tile dating from 1700 to 1900 AD, indicating that this area of the site did not merit further archaeological investigation. There appeared to have been two phases of sediment extraction from the site, firstly when the brickearth was removed and then during the subsequent excavation of the basements of the buildings.
