Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an extension to a shopping centre identified that it was situated just off a gravel island, centred on Staines High Street, which had formed a focus for settlement since the Late Neolithic. In contrast to the High Street area, excavations in advance of the construction of the Elmsleigh Centre had established that the gravel surface dipped beneath the Elmsleigh Centre, with the area featuring an increasing depth of alluvial clays and silts. It was suggested, therefore, that the bus station site had been prone to seasonal flooding from the prehistoric period onwards and, as a result, had been avoided as a settlement or occupation site. Accordingly, it was suggested that the site had a low archaeological potential and that a low-key response to the threat of development, such as a watching brief, would be appropriate. [Au(adp)] |
