Abstract: |
The assessment examined the archaeological potential of a 4-km stretch of proposed pipeline. The planned route lay along the River Ravensbourne, which had had a history of frequent flooding with subsequent realignments and canalisation. There was clear evidence of human activity in the area ranging from the prehistoric, Roman, Saxon and medieval periods. Documentary evidence for the development of Lewisham during the post-medieval period was extensive. Much of the archaeological and historical evidence came from the east bank of the river, where it seemed that the focus of the early settlement lay. However, the west bank had remained largely unexplored and the greatest potential for discovery there may have been from the prehistoric period. [Au] |
