Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a motorway service area identified that a scatter of Roman pottery, a spread of late medieval or post-medieval tile and brick and two prehistoric artefacts had been found at the site, and that areas of possible ridge and furrow were present. Remains recorded within 1km of the site included a medieval moat which had survived as an earthwork, a medieval to post-medieval brick kiln, a farmhouse and a barn dating from the 16th century, and a scatter of Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flints. It was concluded that the site had a high archaeological potential. It was proposed that an intensive walkover survey, fieldwalking, a geophysical survey and trial trenching should be carried out. Magnetic susceptibility mapping and a gradiometer survey were subsequently undertaken. Neither technique produced any evidence for substantial archaeological features, although the gradiometer survey detailed a few possible isolated pits or hollows, which were not necessarily of archaeological significance. A surface scatter of burnt flint associated with a single unabraded flint flake was noted at one location; this may have represented the dispersed remains of a prehistoric burnt mound. [AIP]
