Abstract:
An excavation was carried out at the site of a disused colliery, in advance of a scheme of protective landscaping. The colliery had been founded in 1827 and had continued to function until c. 1863, after which oral evidence suggested that its buildings had been adapted into a brickworks. The excavations produced significant new evidence relating to the origins and development of the site. Four phases were identified, with Phase 1 dating from 1820-1835. The earliest structure was a massive, 10m high stone retaining wall which had supported the platform of fill material on which the colliery had been constructed. Phase 2 (1835-63) comprised modifications to the colliery. The remains of a rectangular stone building and several features, including a metalled surface, dated from this phase. During Phase 3 (1863-1925), when the site had functioned as a brickworks, at least three of the four entrances identified within an earlier building had been deliberately blocked, and a large brick-vaulted flue had been constructed in the centre of the building. Other recorded remains relating to this phase included a probable brick kiln, a lean-to structure and areas of cobbling. The brickworks had fallen into disrepair by the time of the Ordnance Survey map of 1925. [AIP]
