Abstract:
<summary>A desk-based assessment was commissioned in advance of the submission of a planning application. The site is 6.5 - 11m wide x 30m long, with a Listed Building in the western part and an open yard to the rear. Services are fed from Widemarsh Street, and rainwater gullies probably lead to soak-aways in the rear yard. The building has a three bay facade, three storeys plus cellar plus attics, and full-width front and back rooms. It dates from the mid 18th century, although the rear rooms may not have been added until the mid 19th century, when much alteration was done, including the addition of a poorly built northern range. Early this century, the ground floor of the western portion was lowered to pavement level. An 1858 map shows a huge L-shaped garden; this had been substantially reduced by 1886. Since 1911, the lower part of the house has been used as a shop. The archaeological potential of the site could include Saxon settlement and post-Conquest burgage plots. It seems unlikely that later uses of the site would have disturbed the archaeology. An archaeological mitigation strategy is advised, to include evaluation, preservation {italon}in situ{italoff}, and perhaps some excavation. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM20111
