Abstract: |
A single trench revealed the Medieval town ditch. The lower ditch fills comprised a sequence of waterlogged deposits overlaid by an intermittently anaerobic deposit, but no organic remains associated with the Friary were recovered. One ditch fill contained an assemblage of pottery dating almost exclusively to the 1680s-1690s reflecting a period of infilling of the ditch. A truncated feature located centrally within the trench appeared to be the robbed-out northern continuation of a limestone wall visible in a trench some 30m to the south of the site. This feature is interpreted as being the lining for the western edge of a part of the late 18th century Salisbury to Southampton Canal. [Au(abr)] |
