Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site, which lay within an Archaeological Priority Zone as defined in the Borough's Unitary Development Plan Proposals Map. The site was thought to have a low potential for in situ remains of the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age. The site had a low potential for the Roman period and a low or very low archaeological potential for the Palaeolithic, Saxon and early medieval, medieval and early post-medieval periods. The site had been in horticultural use since the 1500's and had been built up since the 1700's. The site had been redeveloped on a number of occasions and may have received some bomb damage in the Second World War. Archaeological monitoring of five geo-technical test pits revealed no evidence for human activity prior to the late 17th century. Very low-grade early 19th century deposits (containing residual 17th and 18th century pottery) up to 1.3m thick had been identified across the site. On the basis of the available archaeological, documentary and cartographic evidence and on the results of the archaeological monitoring of five geo-technical test pits we would not recommend the implementation of any further archaeological mitigation measures in this particular instance.
