Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a sewage treatment works and a 1km length of sewer pipe identified that the archaeological record for the immediate area was dominated by the development of the medieval urban centre of Watchet, from its probable origins in the later Saxon period at a site immediately to the west of the present town. No archaeological remains pre-dating the Saxon period had been recorded in the area. The north-eastern end of the pipeline would cross the area of probable medieval settlement, albeit largely on an alignment previously used as the route of the West Somerset Mineral Railway, the construction of which was likely to have involved extensive and locally deep disturbance. It was recommended that a watching brief shoud be undertaken during trenching operations for pipe-laying and groundworks for the treatment works. [Au(adp)] |
