Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks associated with the construction of a block of flats at a site which lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance. Evidence of activity dating from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age had been recorded in the surrounding area, and part of a cemetery of probable Roman date had been found 200m to the south. A medieval village had lain nearby. During the watching brief, no significant archaeological remains were revealed. However, the natural subsoil was not exposed, so that it was possible that remains could have survived below the level affected by the groundworks. [AIP] |
