Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed refurbishment of the largely Victorian building. The site lay in an Archaeological Priority Zone. Evidence of prehistoric occupation had been recovered from many of the surrounding sites, with potential palaeo-environmental and dating information. No known archaeological work had previously been undertaken on the site and no precise information was available regarding the extent of surviving archaeological deposits within the actual site. The archaeological potential for the site was moderate, on account of its location in the Thames floodplain, previous archaeological work in the vicinity, and its known history from documentary and archaeological sources. As limited groundworks were proposed it should be assumed, in the absence of an existing basement on site, that any intrusive activity in previously undisturbed areas could have a limited but damaging effect on any potential archaeological remains. In the absence of any proposed below ground activity, there appeared to be limited to nil threat to archaeological deposits by the refurbishment proposal. [Au(abr)] |
