Abstract: |
Two evaluation trenches were excavated prior to the proposed residential redevelopment. The site lay within an area known to have been occupied by the Augustine Priory of St Peter and St Paul from 1158. It was clear that the site occupied what was once either a wide water channel or an area of marshland, and that this was subsequently covered by flood-deposited alluvium which over a period off time weathered to form a naturally reclaimed land surface. Although no building structures were found, the presence of demolition debris in trench 1 identified the horizon at which the Priory would have been built as being at the level of the alluvial clay described above. It also suggested that building remains relating to the Priory might have survived nearby. [Au(adp)] |
