Abstract: |
A single trench was excavated to investigate the proposed footprint for a new building. It was discovered that the area had suffered little damage to archaeological horizons in the recet past, if anything the site had been raised by the addition of a demolition level associated with World War II damage. A drain, from which a fragment of medieval or later tile was recovered, a medieval ditch, an undated pit/posthole and two unidentified and undated features were excavated. Limestone blocks from the drain were thought to have been robbed from a nearby decaying priory building, the Priory of St Denys, no longer in existence. The medieval ditch may have been a boundary depicted on a map of 1658. [Au(adp)] |
