Abstract:
Fieldwalking and a magnetometer survey were carried out at the proposed site of an extension to a golf course. Fieldwalking in advance of the construction of the existing golf course in 1992 had identified a large concentration of burnt flint and a smaller concentration of medieval pottery. A sherd of early Saxon pottery had been found in the same area as the burnt flint. Stripping of the centre of the flint concentration in 1993 had revealed the remains of several Early Iron Age structures and a sunken-floored building of probable early Saxon date. The remains of a double ditched enclosure of possible Late Bronze Age date had been identified within the proposal area, by aerial photography. The fieldwalking identified a large concentration of burnt flint, a second burnt flint concentration which included two small sherds of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery, and an area containing three sherds of early Saxon pottery. The geophysical survey, undertaken in the vicinity of the possible Late Bronze Age enclosure, identified three small enclosures, two of which were ill-defined, and a small number of features, some of which lay within the site of the cropmark. The first two areas found during fieldwalking may have marked the locations of small Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age farmsteads, whilst the third may have marked the position of a 6th/7th century settlement. The areas discovered by the geophysical survey were undatable, but may have related to the cropmarked enclosure. [Au(adp)]
