Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based appraisal concluded that the site had a high potential for the presence of multi-period activity dating to the prehistoric and Roman periods, in particular for further evidence of Bronze Age and later field systems. This was based on the presence of archaeological cropmarks across much of the site, from recent excavations in the southern part of the site (Green Park Areas 9 and 10), and from extensive excavations carried out immediately east of the site as part of the Green Park Phase 1 and 2 mitigation. The site was prone to flooding, therefore there was a potential for the presence of waterlogged organic remains and well-preserved environmental deposits. The potential for early and medieval archaeology was probably low. The site was likely to have been located in the common waste at the very edge of two parishes and would not have been a focus for settlement. The earliest map consulted dating to 1760 and the Tithe Map of 1840 both showed a green in the centre of the site, west of Small Mead Farm; it was possible that there was some secondary settlement around the edges of the green but it was probable that the green served as a junction between drove ways off the common. Known sites with the proposed Phase 3 development site that had not been subject to field evaluation included the cropmark of a possible Romano-British enclosure visible on air photographs and a curvilinear cropmark visible on air photographs in the northern part of the site.
