Abstract: |
On the available evidence the study area was not considered to have had significant potential for remains of the Palaeolithic or Mesolithic periods. Some potential was recognised for the presence of remains of the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods. Due to the presence of Westenhanger house and moat the archaeological value of the study area for the medieval and post-medieval periods was assessed as being high. All of the site lay within a post-medieval park and therefore was by its very nature integral to the landscape setting of the post-medieval complex and to a lesser but also important degree for the medieval occupation of the site.
